We sat down with one of our directors, Simon Young, to find out more about what a typical day is like for him at Blue Latitude Health:
I'm usually woken up at 6am when one of my sons comes in looking for a cuddle, or wants his bottom wiped.
I get the boys breakfast, usually porridge, cereal, or toast, we chat and play, then I watch some TV whilst completing a few chores.
I cycle 15 miles to work every day, so I get my kit on, get Strava going and race various MAMILs (Middle-aged Men in Lyrca) to work across Richmond Park and down the embankment. I’m KOM (King of the Mountain) on my route to work (Richmond to Blackfriars).
I arrive between 9 and 9:30. Sometimes I go for a run and swim first (if I'm training for something, like the recent triathlon I completed in London).
Before I do anything I read emails, after that I have a quick shower, then make some cereal for breakfast otherwise I can’t last till lunch.
I generally have lots of conversations, trying to make sure that everyone is utilised, that we have the right resource on the right projects. I will set-up project focused meetings on the clients I’m running. About a third my time is developing business, a third running projects, and the other third managing resources. This varies and sometime when a big project is running, or I’m travelling with work, there is very little time for anything else.
When I’m working on a project I love to travel and run workshops. I'm lucky to have experienced many different cultures in some of the greatest and most diverse cities in the world. My role has taken me to over 30 countries so far, including Columbia, Korea, Japan, and Australia, and that's just in the last 12 months! I learn so much dealing with the differences, it’s fascinating.
I don’t listen to music usually. I prefer to hear and be part of conversations, and besides I am so out of touch with music since I became a dad, that I’m more likely to be humming the Fireman Sam theme tune than listening to the latest London Grammar album.
I always go out to get lunch, but often bring it back to my desk. I like to lunch with people, there are so many amazing places to get food in this area that it’s tough to decide. I’m also incredibly greedy, so tend to have twice as much as your average person.
Sometime I get little leftover packages from my wife, she is a great chef, but when I do I tend to eat it in the morning, and then get more lunch.
There's no routine here, it really depends on the day. There might be a meeting, a client call, some business development... every day really is different.
I’m more inclined to tackle that difficult presentation or pitch I’m leading in the afternoon, once I’ve got all the other smaller things out of the way. The things that require real focus and thinking. I love this aspect of my job, but sometimes find it tough to focus if there are other tasks distracting me.
Managing resources get more complex as the business grows, especially when clients delay or change scope, and we find ourselves with people who suddenly become too busy or not busy enough. It's because of this I'm often 'shuffling the deck' and moving people about to make sure all our projects are delivered to a high standard, and our people have fulfilling and varied roles wherever possible.
Most evenings I leave the office at 6pm, then it’s a race back down the embankment in the MAMIL peleton to get home in time to read my boys a story and take over from my wife who has been run ragged all day by those monkeys.
Once the boys are in bed I have dinner with my wife (who has just started her own business) and we chat about our day. If we can find a good series on Netflix we'll watch a bit of TV, nothing more productive than that, it’s easier to be productive in the morning when we’re less frazzled!
I’m big into current affairs, I regularly check the news on the BBC, Times, FT, and sometimes trashier press for amusement. I’m also into my Facebook news feed, it's fun and good to keep in touch with lives of friends in such an easy way.
Simon has specialised on the healthcare sector for more than 7 years, working with key clients, including Eli Lilly, Amgen and Astellas in over 20 global markets. Working in digital for over fourteen years, Simon has been a key part of Blue Latitude Health since day one and he is now a board member. He has played an important role in the development of our clients’ business and services, and is focused on continuing to drive our evolution.
